Some Doors Should Never Be Opened: Not Every Spirit Is From God

1 John 4:1 says: "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits, whether they are of God."

There is a growing curiosity in the world today about the spiritual realm. People are seeking answers, comfort, and connection -sometimes even trying to reach beyond this life to find it. But not every door we can open is one we should open.

God never left us guessing about this.

In Deuteronomy 18:10–11, He clearly warns against practices like divination, sorcery, and consulting the dead. Likewise, Isaiah 8:19 asks: “Should not a people seek their God? Why consult the dead, on behalf of the living?” We are not to consult the dead for guidance. We have out Lord...the Bible describes as our only Mediator between man and our Father in heaven.

These aren’t just outdated rules—they are loving boundaries to protect us.

Scripture also tells us something deeply important: not everything in the spiritual realm is from God. 2 Corinthians 11:14 reminds us that even Satan can disguise himself as an "angel of light". That means what appears comforting, familiar, or even “good” may not be from God at all.

Some doors look harmless… but they are not.

God doesn’t warn us to restrict us - He warns us to protect us. He knows what we cannot see. He knows the danger behind doors we may be tempted to open out of curiosity, grief, or longing.

Key Reasons for Caution

Spiritual Dangers: The Ouija board serves as a direct, uncontrolled, and dangerous doorway to the spiritual world, allowing negative or demonic entities to enter. Users may invite demonic influence or, "demonic possession or harassment".

Mental and Emotional Harm: Even if seen as a game, it can cause severe fear, night terrors, and nightmares.

Psychological Effects: Psychology Today notes that the primary, scientifically accepted risk is psychological harm resulting from the ideomotor effect, where users unintentionally move the planchette themselves, often accompanied by intense, manufactured fright.

We don’t need to seek answers from the unknown, when we already have access to the One who knows all things. So instead of reaching outward into the darkness, we turn upward to the light.

"God's Word is a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path." Psalm 119:105

God's Word provides immediate, daily guidance (lamp to the feet) and long-term direction (light on the path) to navigate life, avoid spiritual dangers, and make righteous decisions. It acts as a guide to illuminate the way in darkness, offering clarity and protection.

(Lamp to my feet, meaning): Scripture shines light on the immediate, next step, providing practical wisdom for daily decisions.

Long-Term Direction (Light to my path): This refers to the broader, future direction of one's life, helping believers discern their ultimate path and purpose.

Protection and Safety: Avoiding pitfalls, dangers, and traps in life by following the guidance provided in the Bible. Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, which emphasizes the value of God's law.

Light in Darkness: The world is often depicted as a dark place, and the Word provides necessary light to prevent getting lost or hurt.

Dependence on the Holy Spirit: The oil for the lamp is the Holy Spirit, which illuminates the Word.

We stay close to Christ. And we trust that what God has forbidden is not something we are missing, but something we are being spared from.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
— James 4:7

I witnessed that when I was 10 years old. With my sisters playing with an Ouija board. My younger sister, who was in 3rd grade, started sleepwalking at night and wetting herself even in the middle of the day. I caught her walking out into the middle of the night into the street. I had to walk her back to her bed. My other sister who was in 5th grade started acting out with older men. I didn’t know that until I was grown and the younger sister told me about it.

I knew better than to mess with the Ouija board because I had been reading the Bible from the beginning and had read about that in Leviticus.

@cherokeepatti Absolutely, the Ouija board serves as a direct, uncontrolled, and dangerous doorway to the spiritual world, allowing negative or demonic entities to enter.

Thanks for sharing your stories. That was very interesting to read.
