Book to share - April 2026

Ways of Seeing: Orthodox Spirituality for Our Modern World, written by Father Nevsky Everett, published by Canterbury Press Norwich only two months ago. I do love this book because it gives the Orthodox Religious Imaginary the John Berger-treatment from his own little book that was televised in the 1970s under the similar title of "Ways of Seeing".

It's a neat little book with five splendid chapters, and it offers a series of profound and beautifully articulated reflections that capture the heart of Orthodox spirituality and practice in the 21st century. Its premise is that Orthodox spirituality is not merely about different rituals, but about a fundamental shift in perception - learning to see God, ourselves, and the world in a new light.

Rev Dr Nevksy is the Anglican chaplain serving at the Church of the Resurrection in Bucharest, and writes thus from the perspective of the 'participant observer' standing at the intersection of two spiritual worlds. As the book cover says, Orthodox Christianity has long captivated Westerners, often through the beauty of its icons and the quiet power of the Jesus Prayer, although it offers far more than antiquity.

The subject matter of the book according to his author represents a rich, living tradition with transformative insights for today's spiritual journey. One feels immediately that the author wrote his pieces first for a series of retreat addresses. Through the five thoughtful chapters that explore key elements of the tradition, readers will encounter fresh perspectives on God, self, and the world.

Well, it's a book alright for anyone still searching for spirituality away from the more mondain catholic or evangelic crowd. Moving way beyond superficial exoticism to reveal the deep wisdom Orthodoxy has to offer to contemporary faith and practice, it will be the ideal resource for anyone seeking to engage with the enduring beauty and relevance of Orthodox spirituality
