I always thought it was the opposite. The absence of religion.

Atheism is actually believing that God does not exist. The atheist cannot prove God does not exist any more than that the theist can prove that God does exist. Hence atheism is a faith statement just as theism is.

I think you're confusing faith (belief without or in spite of evidence) and just plain belief which is derived from evidence or lack thereof.

And even if you want to argue that it is faith based you couldn't stretch that to be an actual religion

No. It's a belief that arises from a lack of evidence to the contrary.
Atheists don't claim to KNOW that god does not exist. Well not the honest ones, anyway. Atheists hold the provisional belief that god does not exist because there is no compelling reason to believe he does
