"Can-" isn't a Latin word, never mind one meaning "serpent" or "dragon". Latin has quite a few words for snakes, including serpens, vipera, draco, anguis, and colubra. If anything animal-related "can-" or "-can" would indicate something to do with dogs (canes). And it's much more likely to be related to canere/cantere, meaning "to sing".

Associating "vates" (noun) and "vaticinor" (verb) meaning prophet/to prophesy has a degree of legitimacy.

"Vatican" could mean "the place from which prophecies are sung/proclaimed", (which was the Romans' own etymology for it), but people who actually know what they're talking about which apparently doesn't include you would tend to suggest it's derived from a now-lost Etruscan word. There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that what we now call the Vatican Hill or mons vaticanus had anything whatsoever to do with prophesying in pagan times.

What we do know, of course, is that it was a place of entertainment, because St Peter's basilica is built over the site over the Circus of Nero (or Caligula), where, at least according to legend, St Peter was martyred.

Besides which, the St Paul VI Audience Hall doesn't look like a serpent, inside or out, but like what it is: a thoroughly and reprehensibly ugly mid-century monstrosity that can't fall down soon enough.

@ArcAngel I mean a degree in ancient history and a reasonable facility with Latin doesn't mean anything, of course. (I assume my qualifications as a Catholic mean fairly little).
