If you don’t get this, we can’t talk

When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said 'Let us pray.' We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land.

This is true to a certain degree but, you don’t mention the fact and neither did he, that many alliances and deals where made with local tribes about land. Many tribal chiefs murdered one another and there where a great many wars going on before the missionaries ever arrived. Many tribes looked for protection from the missionaries. It’s not a two viewpoint issue. A lot of South Africa was also uninhabited at the time.

@CrystalSkull That is no excuse for the act of forcing religion on other cultures and a whataboutism argument. Tribal warfare has more validity to it because it came out of their culture(s) while religious imperialism imposed ways of life and a faith.
@Gloomy wait you’re saying murder is ok because it’s part of a culture? I wasn’t excusing anything, I was merely stating some facts that weren’t mentioned. I agree about religion, but for example there are ways of life that imperialism did impose that benefitted societies. Not that I’m justifying anything, just saying everyone colonised everyone at the end of the day.

No but it has more validity to it in the context it happened when compared to eurocentrism and the crimes committed by colonisation.

but for example there are ways of life that imperialism did impose that benefitted societies.

I have to disagree as a cultural relativist this stance is unacceptable and for a long period of time these ways of life were not even accessible to the colonized people.
@Gloomy validity? We can agree to disagree on that one and that’s ok. You’re a cultural relativist, and I understand why you see things in the way you do. I simply don’t forget that all human nature is greedy and it’s implicit in our nature. For a long time many cultures weren’t accessible to others, that has been the history of the world. Lucky indigenous knowledge systems are re-emerging and cultures now become a melting pot, basically as it’s always been. And people are still greedy and killing one another and taking resources, this has never changed.

I can't agree I believe human nature is formed by the totality of social relations and the systems under which we live influences those.
We are needy and have needs that should be taken care of like safety, shelter, food, love and security.... but the emphasis on greed nowadays is a product of capitalism. Don't get me wrong greed is also part of human nature but the importance it plays and the way it influences human relations is not universal. Greed is amplified by certain power relations.
Like it arises in positions of no control and zero power and is a sign of desperation and longing for needs that are not taken care of or the exact opposite with people in positions of control and power that have the ability to accumulate more and more material wealth and cannot be satisfied anymore.

Lucky indigenous knowledge systems are re-emerging and cultures now become a melting pot

That really is a great development.
@Gloomy I don’t disagree that it’s a byproduct of capitalism, but where isn’t it? Greed denotes power. Power is resources. Where in the human history have people not stolen, colonised and ruled over one another? To me the greed factor should be less now than in the past, as we’re supposedly more enlightened. But really we’re not in many ways. Material wealth, cattle, access to water, territory that’s good for defence, food, whatever. It’s always been this way hasn’t it? So in my mind the best we can do to be truly egalitarian is to be aware of human nature, and that really it’s not about race, culture, or creed but about who has what. If there wasn’t capitalism what system would there be that works better? Show me one place where it hasn’t been this way? As far as I can tell that’s the way of the world. I’m all for change but sadly I believe ideologies that essentially come from a good mental place but disregards human nature fail for that exact reason. Which is to want what others have.

@Gloomy Forcing religion? God tells us to go out to the entire world and tell people about the Good news that Jesus took their sins on his own shoulders and now there is freedom in Christ, He hears their prayers and will bless them with an abounding life and the missionaries will feed them. My aunt did that for 50 years in Africa and the Africans loved her so much they were so thankful and gave her handmade african art.

@Carazaa the presumption that someone needs to hear about another god, that is “better “ than what they grew up is a manipulative.

Mt 6:19-21
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where
moth and rust do corrupt, and where thieves break through
and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither
moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not
break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

@CrystalSkull interesting points…I would counter with the value add that the colonial system entangled with the church did more harm.

@CrystalSkull you are blessed amount users.

@SW-User
Yes, ignorant humans always seek wealth and treasures on
earth instead of seeking them in heaven.
Scott
@SW-User did more harm than what specifically? I’m no fan of the church but i don’t think one can measure these issues properly. How does one probe such a thing?
SW-User
@ArcAngel was Yahweh married?
SW-User
@CrystalSkull being left alone to lead their lives.
@SW-User who though? I mean take South Africa for example…there wasn’t a peaceful utopia…tribes were moving down from the North and eliminating entire other tribes. History books say a whole 29 tribes were eliminated by Shaka Zulu. Totally. The Khoisan warred, the Pondo fought the Zulus, the Khoisan the Xhosas. Etc etc. there was no peace. The people of the land colonised one another before they were colonised. This is the nature of human beings. Sadly. So how does one measure this?
SW-User
@CrystalSkull so the British ultimately decide upon Apartheid…was that better ?
Gloomy · F
@CrystalSkull By applying cultural relativism. Understanding the warfare, politics and life of similar cultures in a geographical area by not applying ethno and eurocentrism.
ArcAngel · 61-69, M
@SW-User
No.
Scott
@SW-User Absolutely not. It wasn’t the British who decided on apartheid, it was the national party, Afrikaners for the most part, an abhorrent system. Of course it wasn’t better, however we were talking about colonising, that happened long after apartheid . What I was highlighting was the fact that things would have run on a similar system had no colonisers ever arrived. It already was. People have taken over other people since the dawn of humanity, it’s greed and human nature. Look at the news? How are things better or different, anywhere?
@Gloomy ok then it would have been Afrocentric, do you think discrimination and violation of human rights would have been any different? Are they different, anywhere in the world?

All of this is under the influence of the fallen mind
programs. Read the Keys of Enoch and YHWH will
wipe away all your tears and concerns.
