Yes they can. What you do to see if people are telling you the truth, is see if it matches up with the Word of God. If not, walk away. It's not what you or I say, but what God says, that counts. @Kuronekko:

@Kuronekko: They can if they study his Word. He gave it to us, so we would know how to have eternal life when we die, and not have to guess. Plus, it's free, just for the asking. God is perfect. He can't lie. He's trustworthy. If he wasn't, I sure wouldn't have spent the last 43 years after I got saved, telling people about him. Notice I said [b]after[/b] I got saved, because you can't earn your way to heaven by good works or anything else. One is saved by grace, which is unearned favor from God, through faith.

I used to think the same, but God's Word showed me differently. If we could save ourselves, then of course that would be [i]us[/i] doing the saving, and not Jesus. It would defeat the whole purpose of Jesus dying on the cross. It took a [u]sinless[/u] sacrifice to pay for our sins. That leaves us out.
