Why is this muppet trying to equate circular and spherical?

If you’re a Bronze-Age goat herder standing on a hill and you look around the horizon, the earth will indeed appear to be circular

But a circle is a two-dimensional shape

Saying that the earth is circular is the same as saying that the earth is flat

In fact, the Earth is spherical (an oblate spheroid, to be precise)

That was known by the Ancient Greeks around 500 years before the bible came along (it was forgotten when the Greek civilisation fell)

Eratosthenes of Cyrene used three sticks (yes, it’s that simple!). One stick was on the equator at the time of the Summer Solstice (when the Sun is directly overhead), one stick was far to the north, and the other stick was far to the south.

The equatorial stick cast no shadow, and the other two cast shadows in opposite directions.

That could only happen on a sphere.

Using the length of the shadows he calculated the Earth’s circumference to be around 38,600 kilometres.

Th actual value is 40,000 kilometres.

Every single so-called 'scientific fact 'in the bible was either already known, or is just plain wrong
@newjaninev2 mm, that method doesn't seem to me a definitive of spherical shape. Just that the sun (or source of light) is in a position to make those shadows. Believe me, I'm not saying the world is flat. I just need to study more on why the method proposed indicated a sphere.

@newjaninev2 Your modern bigotry is completely unfounded. We have evidence that ancient man knew the earth was a sphere just as they knew the stars were very far from earth. Ancient people were not ignorant rubes as we like to think they were. They were doing things we can not replicate.
@hippyjoe1955 it is a huge misconception that ancient people were not smart. People have been people since the beginning of there being people. Means there were smart humans, and dumb ones just like there are today. Or perhaps I shouldn't say 'dumb', but those who just think differently.

Three different shadows simultaneously

Are you proposing that the sun was in three different positions at the same time?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@hippyjoe1955 yes, I’ve just said that... Eratosthenes of Cyrene lived from 276 BC until 194 BC
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@froggtongue Intellect is not synonymous with knowledge.

I have been discussing knowledge, not intellect
@newjaninev2 no. Of course I'm not saying there are three different suns. Though that does inspire me to think of a sci-fi that includes that now.
But if you scale down the light source to just a flashlight, the flatness of a large room, and three sticks, you can simulate the three different shadows again. It doesn't make the room into a sphere.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@froggtongue and it doesn’t’t mean that your simulation meaningfully replicates the situation of a distant light source
