I thought the reason was that God had sex with Mary without telling her

@fairefoutre Depends on who you are. If you're God in that situation, it's a win win. If you're Mary though who's never had sex with her husband, you're in trouble

@Nomad7 Fitting in to several myths of a god impregnating a human woman.
Now, if God had made Joseph pregnant and he’d given birth to Jesus instead, that would have been a real miracle!

@fairefoutre The Immaculate Conception is a Catholic belief referring to Mary’s birth, not Jesus’.

@fairefoutre @TheWildEcho "In Christian theology, the Immaculate Conception is the conception of the Virgin Mary free from original sin by virtue of the merits of her son Jesus. The Catholic Church teaches that God acted upon Mary in the first moment of her conception, keeping her "immaculate".
The Immaculate Conception is commonly confused with the virgin birth of Jesus, the latter saying that Jesus was conceived and born by his mother Mary without a human father. While many Christians believe in the virgin birth of Jesus, it is principally Roman Catholics, along with various other Christian denominations, who believe in the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception."
