Have you heard the story of Jonah? God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, the Assyrian capital and prophesy their destruction. [Spirituality & Religion]

Jonah didn't want to because he thought the Assyrians would kill him. The Assyrians tortured people who had a religion other than theirs, or another opinion. They would put hooks in their tongs and stake them to the ground, skin them alive, gouge out their eyes etc.

So Jonah ran from God. He jumped on a ship. God was angry with him and made a storm. Jonah realized that God was angry with him and he said "throw me overboard because its my fault that there is a storm." The men on the ship realized that God made the storm because He was angry, and that Jonahs God controlled the storm. They threw Jonah overboard and a big fish swallowed him. And then the storm quieted down. Jonah repented and told God that he would go to the Assyrians, even though he probably would get killed by them. He went and they repented.

@BridgeOvertroubledWaters That day Bart went into a butcherschop full of customers, all dressed up with a belt full of explosives. He said to the butcher: "become vegan, or I'll blow up your morbid temple of the eating of the flesh.". The Butcher decided to quit his job, burn down the shop and tell everyone Bart did it for the insurance money. Bart didn't blow up annyone that day... He saved the custommers, the butcher and all the animals who are going to be sold in that particulair shop. Bart was a real hero sitting out a 10 year sentence. Vegans still send him letters. *the end*

@Carazaa The tactic of every tyrant.

@Kwek00 No The Assyrians were the tyrants they gouged out the eyes of people, and skinned them alive!

@Carazaa They can't both be tyrants?

Why take Jonah annyway, knowing full well that the guy didn't want to go?
In His omnipotence, why not choose someone that says: "okay, let's do this?".
Why all the drama with the whale?

But again... great piece of literature! Really romantic! but for people that take things literally... I mean, seriously you guys and girls? Seriously?

@Kwek00 No they can't both be tyrants, you are right. The Assyrians were tyrants, and God makes the rules and standards for behavior. And "the wages of sin is death" But because he loved them he sent Jonas to warn them of their destruction. Because their repentance (they fell to the ground, they were sorry for their behaviors, and begged God to save them. He had compassion on them.
