Do most scientists believe in God? [Spirituality & Religion]

About two-thirds of scientists believe in God, according to a new survey that uncovered stark differences based on the type of research they do.

The study, along with another one released in June, would appear to debunk the oft-held notion that science is incompatible with religion.

Those in the social sciences are more likely to believe in God and attend religious services than researchers in the natural sciences, the study found.

The opposite had been expected.

Nearly 38 percent of natural scientists -- people in disciplines like physics, chemistry and biology -- said they do not believe in God. Only 31 percent of the social scientists do not believe.

In the new study, Rice University sociologist Elaine Howard Ecklund surveyed 1,646 faculty members at elite research universities, asking 36 questions about belief and spiritual practices.

"Based on previous research, we thought that social scientists would be less likely to practice religion than natural scientists are, but our data showed just the opposite," Ecklund said.

Some stand-out stats: 41 percent of the biologists don't believe, while that figure is just 27 percent among political scientists.

In separate work at the University of Chicago, released in June, 76 percent of doctors said they believed in God and 59 percent believe in some sort of afterlife.

"Now we must examine the nature of these differences," Ecklund said today. "Many scientists see themselves as having a spirituality not attached to a particular religious tradition. Some scientists who don't believe in God see themselves as very spiritual people. They have a way outside of themselves that they use to understand the meaning of life."

Ecklund and colleagues are now conducting longer interviews with some of the participants to try and figure it all out.

I'm a scientist. None of my scientist friends believe in any gods as far as I know.

@SW-User My in-laws are scientists and very religious.
SW-User
@xixgun Cool.
xixgun · M
@SW-User I have no idea if they have any scientist friends.
Carazaa · F
@SW-User Maybe they do but haven't shared that?
Carazaa · F
@xixgun Thanks for sharing that!

@Carazaa That is kind of my point. Religion is totally irrelevant in science. They aren't incompatible, they are orthogonal.
Carazaa · F
@SW-User Isn't the creator important to undertand too?
SW-User
@Carazaa Isn't that what religion is for?
Carazaa · F
@SW-User Religion is to worship God, but all science is finding the truth, including why we were made I think.🌷
SW-User
@Carazaa That is philosophy not science. Science is about using a particular process to investigate an idea. If you can design a reproducible and falsifiable experiment to test the hypothesis that god(s) exists, then you can use science to investigate whether or not god(s) exist, otherwise it isn't science.

Is it not through worship that you develop a relationship and develop your understanding of god(s)? If not, then how?

Also religion isn't just about worship, it often informs culture, social norms, laws, etc.

@SW-User So if you are a biologist and you are researching prayer and you ask 1000 people to pray for a patient that they dont know in a hospital dying and they recover and you test this with many patient, and it is a valid research study. Then we know how prayer influences biology.
SW-User
@Carazaa That doesn't test for the existence of god(s), it tests if there is a correlation between being prayed for and recovering. I know I am being pedantic, but it is an important difference.

Is your hypothesis falsifiable? Let's say you perform the experiment and it is exactly even, half recover and half don't. Will you take this to mean that your hypothesis that praying works isn't true and there are no gods?
Carazaa · F
@SW-User I know there is a God because he answers my prayers miraculously! If you read my post on How to get your prayers answered it is proof of God right there I believe.
SW-User
@Carazaa I am not saying there aren't any gods, I am saying that it has nothing to do with science.
Carazaa · F
@SW-User God created us and He uses science to help us. Science research is Gods invention. Jesus says "You can do nothing without me."
SW-User
@Carazaa Is there anything that is not evidence of god?
Carazaa · F
@SW-User NO, The more we know the Bible the more we know its true and God inspired it. The more we know about science the more we understand what we don't understand.
