I would like to Understand [Spirituality & Religion]

I met a young man who introduced himself and stated that he was Jewish but he meant it as far as an ethnicity. I know a woman who has called herself Jewish but was referring to the religion and not an ethnicity. Now I've heard both in different settings and I've heard people debate about whether being Jewish can be both. I am genuinely curious does Judaism only pertain to religion or can being Jewish include ones genetic makeup or is it very individualized and personal? I don't want to be ignorant or insensitive to the culture.

It can be seen as both an ethnicity and a religion, and within the faith it may be further split by ethnicity, i.e. Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Bukhari...

@GlassDog Thank you for the insight I didn't know that. 😊 can one be ethnically Jewish but not identify with the religion?

@Nine9 I don't know anyone who is, but that doesn't mean people can't. I don't have a good answer to this one, but someone else might. If not, there's a few people I can ask. I live in quite a Jewish city.

@Nine9 Oh, you're welcome. It's really nice to see someone ask a question because they don't want to offend. I wish we all did!

@Nine9 Yes, they can.
