If you ask a preacher a question about something he just preached, and he says 'I was just preaching the word.'... [Spirituality & Religion]

Does that mean everything he said was supposed to be straight from God, and therefore unabe to be enquired about? Or is it just really bad manners to ask questions about something that was preached?

He should absolutely know what he is preaching about and be able to explain it for the hearers. He's to be an under-shepherd for the Great Shepherd. So he is to feed and tend to the flock....was there something that you didn't understand that needs clarity?

@ANewCovenant It's happened with several preachers at several churches. Mostly my questions are about the intended context of their 'word,' especially when it's a rebuke for people who are supposedly not submitting to church leaders enough or not participating enough in church activities(maybe they were sick or overwhelmed by too much social stuff). Mostly I dont find the Bible itself puzzling. I did have a question once about a passage in Mark 11, but the preacher using it said it didn't need any explaining.

@purplepen A preacher said that something didn't need explaining??? I can't think of too much more of a neglecting of his office if he isn't tending to matters of concern from people under his charge.

Without knowing the complaints from the church leaders, I would also be alarmed about the church pushing participation in church activities, only if it's one of those kinds of churches that may be a bit on the legalistic side. I don't have any problem at all with church leaders encouraging its members to participate, but I do have a problem with it when it crosses into rebukes.....only because a person should participate by a heart moved by God. And no person should be made to feel guilty for not participating if they are sick and overwhelmed. Granted, a person can really over stretch themselves with social schedules, especially if they have children, but ALWAYS remember that God looks upon the heart of a person. Is the person living their faith while they are over stretched in their social goings? Some really do make it a point to be salt and light in their day to day lives. If the person isn't necessarily participating in church run activities/serving, but is living out their faith day to day, then they shouldn't be rebuked.

I can't speak to the matter of members supposedly not submitting to church leaders enough as I don't know what the matters are there.

Did you ever get your question answered by anyone about the Mark 11 passage?

@ANewCovenant Thx very much for the response. I got it partly resolved but not completely. For me it's a matter of being expected to override logic when God Himself created our reasoning ability.

@purplepen I know that we are not to lean on our own understanding, however God doesn't code His word to us. He wants us to search out its understanding....hence why He talked in parables. The multitude didn't care too much to understand, however the disciple always went to Jesus to find out the meaning. Today, we go to Jesus the Word to find out.
That’s a weird preacher. They are to teach Zgod’s Word and know what it means, especially. @purplepen

Some things I find that evangelical preachers are very good at preaching about, like the very basic gospel stuff. It's mostly when they add their own stuff and deliver it as gospel truth, or when they say things out of context that it gets confusing.

@purplepen Right, the last thing we want to do, preacher or lay person, is to get in the way of the word. If you are interested, take a listen to the Let's Talk About Jesus radio ministry at Loving Grace. org. I seriously couldn't send you to a safer and more Christ centered ministry that always leads with the New Covenant in Christ. The teacher is 42 years in the ministry and just about Jesus, as it should be.
