I'd be tempted to ban Islam, but no.
@Sicarium Me too.
Scary thought though, and a slippery slope.
Sicarium · 46-50, M
@JustLikeGreta Very slippery.

@Sicarium don't blame you we can be too uptight and some people take things too far.
KENZtheFRENZ · 31-35, F
@Sicarium Why not? If you think it should be banned, just say it.
Sicarium · 46-50, M
@KENZtheFRENZ I don't think any religion should be banned. Nor any idea for that matter.
KENZtheFRENZ · 31-35, F
@Sicarium Yet you'd be tempted to ban Islam?
Sicarium · 46-50, M
@KENZtheFRENZ Tempted, yes. But I wouldn't do it because doing so would violate one of my principles.
KENZtheFRENZ · 31-35, F
@Sicarium What principles are those?
Sicarium · 46-50, M
@KENZtheFRENZ That people should be free to think for themselves. That includes religion.

@Sicarium globally doing away with apostasy and blasphemy laws would have an impact I think

I don't know what you do about the indoctrination-I don't understand how it is so powerful
KENZtheFRENZ · 31-35, F
@Sicarium Tell me some more of your principles, Sicarium. I wanna hear more about the way you think.
Sicarium · 46-50, M
@KENZtheFRENZ That's pretty broad. But essentially people should be as free as possible to think for themselves and express that thinking freely, but that means all people, not just this offended group or that protected group. Everything else flows from that.
KENZtheFRENZ · 31-35, F
@Sicarium When you say people should be as free as possible to think for themselves and express that thinking freely, does that mean you think people should be as free as possible to deceive themselves and express that lie freely? Because that leads to false accusation and that's immoral and severely frowned on. I agree with freedom of speech except when it involves lying about people. That's where a very clear line must be drawn. What do you think about that?
Sicarium · 46-50, M
@KENZtheFRENZ Yes. And that's why we have due process and the presumption of innocence, for when people do express a false allegation. Outside of a court of law we also have libel and slander laws to (hopefully) limit that behavior. Not much else you can do without trampling rights.

More generally, if someone isn't allowed to express a false belief, how are they ever going to know it's false? A lie assumes motive. It is possible for people to simply be wrong without any intent to deceive. Separating those two when it comes to rights would be a nightmare.
