We all run up against it. If you are a Christian for example, your going to find several 'moods' of God in the Bible. The ink on the pages is selfless love and sacrifice, but it can also be human trafficking and genocide. I suppose there is a reason Paul talks about "rightly dividing the word of truth." I think about these things when I read the bible.
Why am I reading?
Who is speaking?
When were they speaking?
Who were they speaking to?

Paul gets pretty 'progressive' in Roman's chapter 14, but then he specifies in other parts of the same letter that 'sexual sin' is unique and worse than other types of 'sins'.

According to some ink, you are still a Christian, and according to other ink, you're endangering your soul. It's an amazing and supernatural collection of writings, but that doesn't mean I'm going to bash my daughter' head in with rocks if she doesn't have an intact hymen on her wedding day.
