No. I think that people think that those who are "religious" think they are perfect so they revel in pointing out their failures. However, most do not claim they are perfect, they simply state the moral standard that they believe one should live by, and inevitably they fail, because they are NOT perfect. Then people call them hypocrites.

@SW-User And who were those trying to legislate whom total strangers could and couldn’t marry ? Theists. They weren’t restricting it to gay and lesbian members of their faith, either.
