Is atheism a religion? I was talking to a guy on here who seems to have fled following a claim he made. [Spirituality & Religion]

He seemed to be saying that because atheism is a response to theism/religion, that it is itself a religion.
This is obviously wrong but i was wondering if anyone has more...credible reasons why atheism should be considered a religion.

isn't it a belief that you don't believe anything?

@Celine rejecting belief in something is not a belief.

@Celine I don't accept the claim that god/gods exist.

@Celine No 1 knows a god exists or not. People either believe it or they don't.

@Celine I answered no to the belief question. Whether or not one does exist is a different question.

@Celine Belief that Gods do not exist is purely a monotheistic definition that has tainted dictionaries. It's simply "lack of belief" and not "belief in no Gods."

If you remove the religious equation it literally translates to "there are no Gods" rather than "belief in no Gods."

Atheists don't claim to have all the answers, they just simply recognize that the evidence isn't there for them.

I don't know if that answers it or not.. I could only answer from my viewpoint :)

@Celine In my opinion a belief requires faith. Would one have faith that God doesn't exist? To me there's a large difference between faith and supported science with peer reviewed studies.

Faith is what many religious people hold onto when facing inconsistencies with many of their texts.

@evadmail OK well I only have faith that gravity exists then.
