Do you believe The Bible is a good guide to life? [Spirituality & Religion]

CaptainCanadia · 41-45, M
Uh, depends on which part you're talking about. I'm really uninterested in enslaving people or stoning my neighbours.
Parts of it are, while other parts are terrible. You still have to use your own judgment, so what good is it?
hunkalove · 61-69, M
No. It's mostly fear and hate, how the Jews are God's chosen people and He hates their enemies, then Jesus says a few good things about how to live in this world, then St. Paul hates everyone who doesn't agree with him. Ending with an insane man's rantings.

Lol. If you are asking then you have never actually read it... The teachings of Jesus are good. That would be about it...
The New Testament isn't much better, condoning slavery (Ephesians 6:5), second-class status of women, anti-gay, etc.
saintsong · 41-45, F
Absolutely yes, it's so accurate to what I'm facing, having films inspired by my life and being stalked by psychics and undercovers, aND hearing angels sING words of comfort to me....it's soooo true and right about everything I've experienced.........that book explains the supernatural to a T. I wish I could explain it all. But it is by no means outdated, nor did it get lost in translation.

[c=#4C0073]lol I can read it. Sorry if you can't, I didn't choose the font size.[/c]

There are a few nice thoughts in there but overall no.
VioletRayne · 31-35, F
[c=#4C0073]It depends on how you look at it. An evil person can find an excuse to be evil within anything. A person who looks at the bible as a whole without picking and choosing verses can indeed live a more virtuous life. I personally combine various faiths I think studying Buddhism in conjunction with the Christian faith is very beneficial.[image deleted][/c]

Funny that people blindly follow a book written a really long time ago by a group of people that where stuck up and killed a lot of "heathens" that practice other religions similar to what Muslims and there "infidel" thing. If anyone read the bible they would find out how messed up it is...
what i dont get about bible folks... why do you cherry pick which rules to follow and which dont... there are some incredibly ridiculous rules about clothing and food in the bible for example... only very very few extremist christians worry about those
SeadragonPrincess · 26-30, F
@MartinTheFirst No you can not ignore the old testament, slavery, stoned to death for being different, relentless killing of those following different religions, bad treatment of women...should I go on? They are all things in the bible.
[c=#BF0080]Not exactly..[/c]
SeadragonPrincess · 26-30, F
Did you ever fully read it yourself? No it is not, look at all the really hateful stuff in there. Probably written by histories older KKK.
all montheistic religions are especially bad as the encourage intolerance vs non believers

SeadragonPrincess · 26-30, F

You guys are so funny.

I think it's a good history book, an excellent source for insight to culture, mores, values and beliefs of those peoples in those times and a good guide for life is you stick to the passages attributed to Jesus.

The Holy Bible is a collection of fables and hopelessly outdated ideas and practices, although with a few nice thoughts, do unto others as you would have them do unto you being one of them.
SW-User
It's a bundle of writings that vary in quality and authenticity but there is still good advice in it (too), if read by someone with some understanding.
SeadragonPrincess · 26-30, F
@MartinTheFirst I would like quotes about where there is "love" in the old testament...It also does not help that there god killed more than the devil...
SW-User
@Martin, earlier you stated "a person who follows the bible to 100% would be better than all of us"
Could you clarify that?

Island - Sure, I meant that the morales and the rules of the bible that are taught, that are active today, would turn you into a man better than anyone else on our planet that we call earth.

Strawberry - We cherry pick, because that's how you find the exact truth. There's reasons why we don't believe that certain rules are any longer needed to be followed, either it's directly replaced in the bible by Jesus and God, or it's a rule regarding hygiene that we have no longer need for in this day and age. Around the times that the scriptures were written, it was recorded (not in the bible but in seperate documents) that pigs and crawfish had dangerous bacterias and they could not handle those bacterias well, resulting in peoples deaths. Today we no longer have that problem, pigs receive antibiotics and are made sure to be healthy (most often), and crawfish are also taken care of in similar ways.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
We work together to find out the truth, it's not just one man who sits in his office looking at the scriptures, there's millions studying the scriptures every day. There were rules back then that are no longer needed because we take care of the reason why they would be needed, the rules were needed back then to help people away from harm, and to teach them that they had to handle it. Without that rule back then, we might have not existed today due to no one understanding why everyone died.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
A person who followed the bible to 100%, would be better than all of us, I am pretty safe to say.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
1# I've read the bible, and no it's not messed up.

2# Different times, different approaches, the killing happened in the law after a trial, and then new times, hence the new testamente, if you've ever cared to read in the bible you should know that.

3# I don't follow it blindly, I study a lot and I always question my beliefs to get to the most accurate belief as possible.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
Haha no, just when you hear the same phrase over and over again without any actual realistic value to it, you just have to question it at some point. I chose to do it this time. Those were empty words, in another way to put it.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
Ignore? I never said ignore, I said that those rules were replaced when a different time started where it was not as much about strict law, as it is about love.
