Also the word origin:
The word ecumenism comes from a family of Classical Greek words: oikos, meaning a “house,” “family,” “people,” or “nation”; oikoumenē, “the whole inhabited world”; and oikoumenikos, “open to or participating in the whole world.”
[from the main article,

The early Christian church developed a habit of convening church leaders in local or regional groups ("synods") to make decisions for their area.

After Constantine converted to Christianity, a question arose in one of the great centers of Christianity (Alexandria) which set the Christian world on fire and resulted in the First Ecumenical Council, which was meant to be the first council of the whole church, which would have decisions binding on "allc Christians. [This is before the "great schism" of the Roman / Orthodox split and ofc before the Protestant movements. Interestingly, it is after the split of the Coptic ("monophysite") Church had already split from the rest of the church.]

That first ecumenical council was held in Nicaea & resulted in the Nicene Creed, which is considered to be fundamental orthodox [in the general sense, not the Eastern Orthodox Church sense] Christian theology. They say it every week in the original Greek in Greek Orthodox churches around the world...

Originally it was an attempt to unite the various Christian faiths. That didn't work, so now the ecumenical movement spends its time discussing how to understand and overcome differences, how faiths can cooperate, and similar issues
