"Poor Little Fool" – Ricky Nelson

[media=https://youtu.be/E3HihNRam6U]
On this day in 1958, Ricky Nelson's recording of "Poor Little Fool" became the first #1 song on the newly-created US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was also a crossover hit, reaching #3 on both the Country and R&B charts.

"Poor Little Fool" was the first song written by Sharon Sheeley (1940-2002), who was a high school student at the time. She went on to have a relatively brief but prolific career as a songwriter.

Among the other performers who recorded songs written or co-written by Sheeley are Eddie Cochran, Richie Valens, Johnny Burnette, Brenda Lee, Del Shannon, the Searchers, the Fleetwoods, Duane Eddy, Irma Thomas, and Jackie DeShannon--with whom she also formed a songwriting partnership.

She wrote an autobiography which is available on Amazon. It could have used a good editor but it is fascinating reading!

My dad wrote a song that Ricky recorded too. Come to think of it, he was a teenager too. He passed 4 years ago on 8/1. Here it is.
