"Can't Help Falling in Love" (1993) - UB40

[media=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajp0Uaw4rqo]

Twenty-seven years ago today, this reggae-pop cover of the Elvis Presley classic began a seven-week run at #1 on the U.S. singles chart.

It was an international hit as well, reaching #1 in Australia, Canada, and a number of European countries. The song was so popular in New Zealand that it topped the singles chart there for 11 weeks and ranked #1 on the year-end chart for 1993. It was the #2 song of the year in the UK and #3 in the U.S.

UB40’s version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” was featured in the creepy erotic thriller, Sliver (1993). I thought the movie was okay (it got bad reviews but was a box office hit). The song was probably the best thing about the film, imo.

Elvis was number one with his version of that same song when I was born.

@NankerPhelge Elvis did the original version. It was indeed a big hit for him.

@Rutterman I know. It was number one when I was born. It was its fourth successive week at number one.

@YoMomma Same here. 🙂

Sliver kinda sucked. Billy Baldwin and Sharon Stone reportedly hated each other on sight, which probably didn't help matters.

@uncalled4 Agreed. It wasn't a great movie. Didn't know about the hostility between the two actors. Must have made things very difficult.
