@revenant I don't know the details of the American left, but in the Netherlands they want everyone to have a roof over their head and be able to afford food. That seems pretty basic to me indeed, especially if it only costs the rich 2 or 3% of their millions.

@revenant If that was the case, you would have paid for it. But would you really refuse to give up a room so others could have one of their own? That is what socialism is about. It's not about the middle man lowering their standards to the basic needs. It's about the richest people giving up a few percent to lift others to a very basic standard.

@revenant Of course, that is what any policy takes. It took someone to design, think and innovate giving the rich tax breaks and putting poor people on the street too.

@revenant Of course it has, and it should have. People who work hard for their money should have a better living standard than those who depend on others. (And those choosing to depend on others should definitely not even come close to the richest people.)

@revenant That is exactly what socialism is. You seem to be thinking of communism. That is were everyone gets the same regardless of effort and that clearly doesn't work.

You did not need roads, because you built them yourself

The medical school your doctor attended? You built it yourself, and created the curriculum.

The car you drive? You invented it, mined the steel used in it, invented the wheel, all the electronics, found the oil, and refined it, all by yourself

Your food? You have the land, you planted, tended to, and harvested it all by yourself, and watered it by going to a river stream, using hand buckets, built by you, obviously.

No person is an island. There are extreme leftists in France, who want to spread their brand everywhere, but for the most part, the system in France, attempts to take care of those who live in France. Just like any decades old bureaucracy, it needs some polishing up, but...
