I really dislike the free hugs crew. I would gladly stop and even contribute to someone with a Slap me for free sign.
BetweenLines · 36-40, F
@TheHammer Hahaha… Maybe that would generate more funds! Malaysia is a conservative country, sure we have our fair share of wild side but… we don’t go around hugging strangers… and that too, for a fee/donation!
Mamapolo2016 · F
@TheHammer You are a marketing genius.
I’m always a bit surprised when travelers ask for donations, shelter, etc.
In no way do I discourage traveling, but what this shakes down to is a peculiar proposal:
So, you are going somewhere you can’t afford to go. I can’t afford it either, but you want me to take money my family needs to help you along so I end up with less food, gas, etc and still can’t travel?
Heckuva deal.

@Mamapolo2016 Exactly this!

The entitled elite at work. They probably have more in a bank account then needed to pay for a life time of trips
BetweenLines · 36-40, F
@Gibbon I believe so too
In fairness... is it really that different to what many children will be doing right now???
Schools are out for summer, you probably know teenagers who want to mow your lawn for a couple of dollars or carry out whatever odd jobs you have going. Maybe they even have a lemonade stall down the road or a garage sale.
They can spend the money they get however they like and age and their parents is probably the only thing holding them back from travelling.
Back in the day, hitch hikers were a big thing... until serial killers bought an end to it, though there are still people on YouTube who are seemingly hitch hiking internationally.

@HootyTheNightOwl To me, it IS different, at least in most cases. You buy lemonade from a kid’s stand, you get lemonade. If you pay a kid to mow grass or shovel walks, your walk gets shoveled or your lawn gets mowed. You listen to a busker, you get music.
You contribute to a begging traveler, you get … what?

@Mamapolo2016 Same thing that you get when you donate to charity... yet people still donate to charities...
Mamapolo2016 · F
@HootyTheNightOwl I try to make donations to charities that are reasonably transparent. That’s not a guarantee, granted. But I can tell myself I’m making somebody else’s life a tiny bit more bearable.
But handing out money to help people get to another location so they can party or just do activities I cannot afford to do does not ring bells for me.

I haven't seen it.TBH I'm not even sure how I feel about it. A sign? It would have to be prevalent/intrusive like those people who walk up to you and ask for gas money at the gas station , but if you ask them to pull up their car and you'll put the gas in their car, they walk off. Thats annoying. (I don't go around offering gas money.)I'll admit I don't like a stranger walking up to me to ask me ...anything.Thanks to the news, I've become scared of strangers. But a sign? I can ignore a sign if I want to.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
We have so many homeless people I wouldn’t notice.
GoFish · 41-45, F
hmmm i wouldn't do that but there's all types out there
DDonde · 36-40, M
Yeah I don't have a great opinion of these people.
I make an effort not to be a nuisance when I travel and these people seem to be doing the opposite.

@DDonde Thank you 😊 that is how it should be
ineedadrink · 56-60, M
I see them as entitled grifters. Tell them to move on or contact their embassy if they need assistance for the air fare home.
Adstar · 56-60, M
No one is forcing you to donate to these people..
People can attempt to get away with anything if people are ok with allowing them to get away with anything..

BetweenLines · 36-40, F
@Adstar Yea, that is what we initially did. And of course they are starting to grow in numbers. Unfortunately just saying “no one is forcing..” isn’t solving the problem. The saddest part is, our government/enforcement isn’t doing much about them. So we could only hope more tourists have this awareness. It is hurting other responsible tourists though 🤷🏻♀
Adstar · 56-60, M
@BetweenLines Governments can have border controls to stop this... Set a cash minimum for tourists to be allowed to enter ones country.. Make sure the time limit they are allowed to stay in your country is commensurate with the amount of cash they need to have..
BetweenLines · 36-40, F
@Adstar That’s how it should be. They probably have the cash/credit card. They just don’t use their money here and opt for fundings.

Wdym no hate, this deserves all the hate. 😭
BetweenLines · 36-40, F
@Nightwings haha..I don’t want to offend anyone here as this could be a norm in some places.
