Help me understand this travel culture (No hate, just trying to understand)

I have always been curious about this.
In Southeast Asia, more and more of such tourists seem to be funding their travels by busking, selling sketches, or asking locals to sponsor the next part of their journey. (Note: local artists and buskers need permits to do so. When tourists do it, they’re bypassing regulations and permits).

I have no issue with travelling on a budget. But I do struggle to understand asking the locals to help fund a holiday, when we ourselves are slogging hard to make a living?

I know this definitely doesn’t represent everyone as there are also wonderful travellers. It is just sad that a small group is giving everyone else a bad name.

How is this viewed back in your country? Is it considered normal, or is it frowned upon if tourists/locals do the same there too?

I see them as entitled grifters. Tell them to move on or contact their embassy if they need assistance for the air fare home.

Yeah I don't have a great opinion of these people.
I make an effort not to be a nuisance when I travel and these people seem to be doing the opposite.

@DDonde Thank you 😊 that is how it should be

No one is forcing you to donate to these people..

People can attempt to get away with anything if people are ok with allowing them to get away with anything..

@Adstar Yea, that is what we initially did. And of course they are starting to grow in numbers. Unfortunately just saying “no one is forcing..” isn’t solving the problem. The saddest part is, our government/enforcement isn’t doing much about them. So we could only hope more tourists have this awareness. It is hurting other responsible tourists though 🤷🏻‍♀

@BetweenLines Governments can have border controls to stop this... Set a cash minimum for tourists to be allowed to enter ones country.. Make sure the time limit they are allowed to stay in your country is commensurate with the amount of cash they need to have..

@Adstar That’s how it should be. They probably have the cash/credit card. They just don’t use their money here and opt for fundings.
