EU’s new social media child protection rules to require all social media accounts to produce state ID

Among the most striking elements of the EU’s new plan to keep kids safe online is the requirement for state ID to be produced by any EU citizen when opening a new social media account such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or maybe even WhatsApp.

Leaked documents suggest that some existing accounts will also be subject to identification checks

Ursula carried out her threats: EU KIDS Act proposal is here!

In its FAQ section, it makes some rather contradictory claims while presenting "privacy-preserving" age verification as the solution for mandatory age checks on social media.

I don't see how they can do this without country specific permissions.

Just try to get China to agree to anything on their social media accounts! Just try!

They would rather hack you and your age verification.

I can see it now Tiktok kids getting adult status verification, compliments of China! 🤣

Absolutely fucking not. 🖕🏻 The only institutions I am willing to provide my ID to are the governmental ones and the banks I use. Social media sites have absolutely no business to have a photo of my ID.

i think the whole Internet needs that for accountability reasons

This sounds like more mass control/surveillance disguised as child protection.
