Not completely you don’t ( right to privacy ) . If you are an adult of legal age and are a legal citizen of this country ( America) you are required to have some form of legal identification

@TexChik oops my bad, we're not even talking about entering another country. Now some won't even get the chance to fly within the USA, just from one state to the next. Imagine, you're a veteran, fighting for the freedom of your country and you invite your friend or relative to your new house for Christmas but due to some technicality, now they can't make it.

@DestroyerOfIdeologies weather issues Maybe ... but if the family are legal citizens then there would be no technicalities . if they are foreign nationals they must have a passport .

We, here in Arizona, were told we need a travel ID because our driver's licenses are good for 20 years, and the picture may not look like us any more.
Also, you aren't REQUIRED to get this ID, and you can rent a car (well, YOU can't because you aren't 25) and drive anywhere you want to go in the contiguous 48 states
