Anybody else having trouble understanding other people?

I'm hoping I'm not losing it or something but I don't understand what people are saying often. People talk really fast and they don't look at you when they talking so I can't decipher what sounds like mumbling to themselves. Then there's this disjointed speech I can't put together. I feel like people think I'm rude. I am slightly deaf in one ear after years of playing drums, shooting and lots of ear infections so that doesn't help either.

I'm just not understanding people and it's frustrating. I don't want to be rude. It's important to me to listen.

It could also be because where I live a lot of people are from Philly, NJ, NY and they do have a different accent but they seem to understand each other.

I have troubles with movies. Not just in English that is my second language but also my native language. Most new movies have terrible sound.

@CrazyMusicLover a lot of it is the crappy audio in today's televisions. Even the high priced televisions don't reproduce audio well.
@CrazyMusicLover I’ve noticed that also and much worse I find when it streams through cable. I have a new Bluetooth head set that I’ve paired with my television and I have to say it works really well 😃

Most of the time I do have a difficult time understanding people. You're a drummer? No wonder you have a difficult time understanding people.

Being an eloquent speaker needs lots of practice..

Living in a world where no one talks much any more and everyone is on their digital devices has really had a negative impact of peoples ability to speak with clarity..

@Adstar I wondered that too. If we're just not used to speaking face to face anymore.

Maybe you should visit an ENT just in case, to see if there’s something they could do to improve that for you

@Younameit I have in the past and they said I have a lot of scar tissue in my right ear, but all they recommended was listening to FM radio to drown out the ringing...
Ever since I was a child due to a viral infection.
Mostly in the right ear and it’s really annoying getting the sounds of words mixed up 😖
Hearing aides can’t correct it and over the years I come to rely on reading lips a little.
Closed captioning is wonderful 🙌
Might want to visit an audiologist though to get things checked. I still go for tests every few years.

@DelightfulyDelectablyDelicious My mom has it the same. She doesn't know what caused it but she says it got significantly worse after a major surgery she had. Hearing aids don't help in noisy environments or when the person speaking stands behind her. That's why my father thinks she reads lips without realizing it.
@CrazyMusicLover Two or more people talking 😳. It’s all mumbo jumbo and very confusing 🤦‍♂
I certainly sympathize with her 😔. You should get her a good wireless headset, I’m currently using beats .

@DelightfulyDelectablyDelicious She has a wireless headset for TV and she loves it.

Yep, bad case of tinnitus from gun and artillery fire. It's soooooooo frustrating.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Ontheroad How good is the filtering? My mom wears an expensive hearing aid and has it set but it doesn't help her very much with background noise.
Ontheroad · M
@CrazyMusicLover and therein lies the problem. First the tinnitus part - depends on how it occurred. If from impacts soudns (loud, sharp noises like gunfire or loud rock music up close and personal), then it is a case by case basis and hearing aid by hearing aid basis.

There is almost always some relief, but seldom 100% relief. A person needs to see an audiologist who specializes in their particular problem.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Ontheroad Her ent doctor told her that in his opinion, her problem is neurological/vascular. Of course, the "hardware" (ear parts) atrophied over time as well but he thinks she has or had a long-term problem with insufficient blood flow to crucial parts in the first place. The cause is unknown.
The way she talks about her audiologist often makes me wonder if it's a truly competent person but what can I know?

YEs I think I'm going a bit deaf, sounds like everyone is mumbling lol

I do - the edge has gone off my hearing (ageing and past noise exposure), and my ears sometimes wax up.

It can make conversation within my own circle in a busy place hard to follow.

Even when I can hear everything else well, the least coherent speech I hear is in film-clips played in reviews on the radio. They are dreadful: fast talking in quiet voices, the words often slurred even through the characters are not drunk (as far as I know), and largely submerged in excessively high backgound noise levels, including sometimes music that need not be there at all.

I've also heard advertisements on commercial radio stations, and not only is the message itself usually inane as you'd expect, but the "small print" at the end is read as a garbled burble of neither use nor ornament.

I don't know what to say. Perhaps drop the expectation to understanding them. The ones who you are meant to listen, you will be able to listen to, and the rest... well.

I too have a hard time sometimes understanding others and others understanding me as well. I try to get better in my articulation and also try to not be ashamed to ask few times for what I didn't understand.

Many people respond with "huh?". I just walk off. My tinnitus is from the military.
