The teacher is not helpless.
The teacher is choosing to be rigid, and not knowing how to choose the right words to defuse this.
The teacher is being passive aggressive, withholdingly/emotionally abusive.
The student is being assertive, transparent with their intentions/acts/feelings.
The whole moment is presented out of context. We can interpret this in any number of ways, and we're really just seeing it through our lens.
I think maybe the student is getting support (despite this seeming like a gang/bully situation), because teachers are given authority. And sometimes authority is abusive, and traumatising, and mishandled.
I think that's why people are cheering the student. The student is an underdog by default, and might even be facing repercussions for her callous act of defiance. Insubordination.
I think the student has more to lose objectively. I don't know if it's a popularity play, it might just be a down-trodden person trying not to let the world push them around.
