Sounds like someone has a political agenda at work. I don't think that the reasons given for cutting University funds are sufficient but that is not what the letter writer is talking about. We have the same problem in Canada where there is talk about taking away charity status from churches. The problem I have with that is the church's money has already been taxed and what is given is given freely as a gift. The church does not 'earn' its money. Its money is gifted to it unless it is running a for profit business which according to the teaching of Jesus it shouldn't be doing anyways.

A not for profit doesn't usually make a profit so losing its tax free status is no big deal.

For a NFP to count on federal funding for all its funding is a premeditated act of suicide. Serious NFPs have diverse funding sources. And usually in the funder's contract is a stipulation that the grantee also received funds from elsewhere. I think I remember. a figure like 75 percent has to come from elsewhere.
