I Want to Help People [Helping Others]

So I'm going to train in counselling/psychotherapy. I'm reading already, learnt so much about things I've already done, and just how integrative my approach has been thus far. I really do select from a wide arsenal of techniques without realising it :) But now I know more about them, and it's a big thrill to find the thing that actually makes me tick. Game on, world. If you'd like to talk to me personaly, you can message me or email me. I'll PM my email address if you ask me for it :) Someday I'll be able to make a living from helping out. That's my dream.

I'll still be here, giving 100% as always. This is my continual professional development time. Throwing myself into situations I have little experience of, noticing what helps what doesn't, and how you guys react to anything I say - even if it's seemingly random/somewhat unrelated. I want to help everyone someday.

Why does this make me sad?

Maybe I fear when you help people it only encourages them to rely on you rather than their self.

I know what you mean, Stufy. I know what you mean. It breaks my heart to charge for it. It's my heart, given freely. But I must also live, and I want to further the field - to contribute to the world of therapy so much we don't need it anymore. Make it accessible to anyone, at any stage of hurt/recovery - and be a guide in many guises that can be acted on almost without aid. I say almost because we all need supervision. We all have impenetrable blind spots. But I can't do that if I can't afford to survive in the meantime. Family. Friends to see. I need time. If people will/can pay, I need to be able to take it. 43hrs a week on minimum wage isn't going to work for me in the end :(

precisely what I learnt the hard way, by devoting myself entirely to someone else. The results were mediocre. Her attitudes changed but she remembered nothing of the hard slog it was because it was uncomfortable - a Dan sight more than that actually but yeah. We bury negative things. so I'm now all in favor of brief therapy. interjections of questioning. injections of understanding of the self. uncovering hidden motivations. Then exit strategy.

I think that is wonderful! My first smile for the day! In my opinion your natural ability and fulfillment you get from counseling others is well earned money. Its nice to know that you will reach people who otherwise would get a less enthusiastic counselor, one that would just take the money-and do mediocre work!!
