Why do people ask "Can I ask you something?" in the middle of a convesration???

When they just asked me questions, I asked them questions and then they ask to ask a question..in the middle of a conversation of questions....hahah

I love it when that happens. Gives me the opportunity to tell them "no, what do you think I am, an information desk?" or say "sure you can as long as you don't mind me lying to you." Either way it seems to break up the tension of some sort of bizarre question coming that someone feels the need to ask for permission to say.
