There is so much grace in conscious detachment, which is, in truth, a nuanced form of attachment
It is a practice I go back to in my profession and personal life.
It is not the complete absence of empathy nor does it require it. It is a deliberate setting aside of personal beliefs, identity, and self perceptions; the disengagement of the sense of self from the actions.
If a patient seeks solace in the recitation of the Quran, I offer those words for their comfort.
If their heart finds peace in a prayer in the name of Jesus, I mirror their devotion.
If they desire silence and a listening heart, my heart embraces it in reverence.
It is all about creating a temple where you transcend the bounds of self imposed limitations.
And in this transcendence, there exists a higher calling which comes if and only if one dares to be purely humble, one dares to objectify themselves and become a mere vessel, a tool, an instrument for their well being, objectified not as a focal point or a model, but as the lens through which their healing is seen and obtained.
To be a link in the chain of another’s betterment is a source of great empowerment. Anyone can find wisdom in this. Moments of self suspension manifest in so many different ways. And many of which are paths to true growth.
