As humans our brains are sadly very binary they way we look at people around us. We either see people as "us" or as "the other".
Whatever the criteria being used. But once we make that distinction our empathy towards the other greatly diminishes, leading to the wars that existed since the dawn of time. If we could remember that we really are on the same side, we can solve some of the global problems the planet is currently facing.

Because all animal brains including ours are wired to live or die mode basically. Its eat or starve,kill or die.Things we need we must choose and obtain. Its why all the "modern" ways of thinking are negative. If you lived 15000 years ago,the idea you can change sex,or not eat certain things simply upon "moral"grounds would have quickly ensured your own death.You would have starved,if you thought you could go "vegan",without meat,in the ice ages,you would have starved,and your comrades would probably have thrown you out if you refused to hunt. Binary is good-its how we evolved.
