Yesterday, my husband answered via our speaker phone. It was a man from India, and he started the same spiel about being from Microsoft. I heard his last name was Wilson, and I yelled, "That's the same idiot who tried to cheat us out of $400.00 three months ago!" "Tell him to never call us again, and hang up!" I'm not usually so rude to people.
I couldn't believe he was stupid enough to call us again, but maybe he doesn't keep track of those who chewed him out the first time that we almost fell for having a lifetime technician for all of our computers.

This is a total scam.
Revenue Canada was renamed to the CRA in 2003 and before that the CCRA. They don't even know the name of the agency they claim to be from. We do not have a tax jail. You will never be asked to pay back taxes or any official agency using gift cards.

Also remember that we have 2 official languages. Try and speak with them in the other (even if it is poor). My 12 year old said "bonjour comment vas" (hello how are you). The response was "we can call back when someone who speaks English is home" No government of Canada official would ever be stumped by such a simple response in either language.

I got 4 calls once on the same day, on a shared work number.

Really sad because some people are getting caught up in this and losing money.

Another scam that I thought was a good deal, was right after we switched to Windows 10, and I thought Microsoft was checking to see if we were having any computer problems, but fortunately I got a bad feeling and called my bank.
Microsoft doesn't make cold calls. They don't offer to give you a lifetime computer technician service, for $399.00. You have to initiate a call to ask for assistance.
Don't fall for that one.

I'll go one further. Below I said that I'd cancelled my landline phone, and I just keep my internet access. Yesterday, some telemarketing company called me on my mobile while I was abroad in Barcelona -- I get to pay for roaming charges and the lost time. So I put a free white-list/black-list phone filter on my mobile. Now only my friends and recognized companies can call me. Also with respect to the above idea of people just coming in the door to check out what you have in your apartment: I emphatically agree with Voyelle that we should simply refuse to let anyone in the door who is not pre-announced. Everything else is a simple invasion of your privacy. It is a sad testimony of having to defend oneself like a fortress, but the defense has to meet the aggression. You're aggressed more, you defend more, tant pis!

PS: The same goes for those women with the lovely-inviting-sexy sounding names who contact you via Skype. I never ask, they are simply blocked immediately.

I called the number back when they tried to call me. And in my best scared voice i said,

"I don't want to go back to jail. What do I need to do? Give you my full name, address and social security number, like it said in the newspaper and tv about this scam?".

I don't know what happened, but we got disconected after I said that. But when I tried to call again I got the recording that I reached a non working number. I guess so many people aren't paying their taxes, that the IRS can't pay their phone bill.

LMFAO

It has been going on in USA for years. I have gotten calls the last 3 years. These people are worse than scum

LMFAO. I got another call yesterday.
I had to remind this "Officer Ricky" that government officials identify themselves without having to be asked.
I also had to tell him that at the IRS, they don't have anyone with the title "Officer".

Their phone got cut off again after that.

So come on people, pay your taxes. It must be embareassing that the IRS can't pay their phone bills.

I used to get up to 9 calls a day, even though my phone was listed as "no unsolicited calls". So I've canceled my landline and only take phone calls from identified and known persons on my mobile. That's it. The rest goes by (blockable) email or by letter. I'm doing fine and my bills get paid on time.

I regularly get fake messages from Bell, saying that unless I call a non-Bell number my service will be cancelled.
In America they come in the middle of the night...wait...I'm thinking of something else. Sorry.
