Why do people reply with one word response?

Me: Hey. Don't you see in college these days. Where did you disappear?
Classmate: Home.
Me: Okay. When did you go?
She: Saturday.

I don't even know what I'm supposed to say next lol. These one-word replies are so annoying. Put some effort into the conversation :|
