why do people give presents on birthdays?

is it just because wow youve stayed alive for another year, you deserve a prize or something

that's the best they can give .. for they can never give away future .. so they give the present ..

and that too cause they have been invited and it has just become a convention .. which is followed ritually ...

but the idea was to provide for capital resource for the future ..
