The Suicide Prevention Day I'm helping to organize is a go!
Back in October, I did some work for a church in a technical capacity. It was for the funeral of a young guy who took his own life. He had everything going for him, friends, full college scholarship, about to get his Ph.D, a girlfriend, family who was behind him...
Then, he was gone. He left a note. He cleaned his apartment top to bottom so no one was inconvenienced. The poor family looked absolutely crestfallen and numb. I couldn't help but be moved. No, we can't change the past.
But we can affect the future in a positive way. I rung up the lead pastor(who is a friend), a mental health professional I know, and we have several local mental health agencies and at least one national one who will help us.
September is Suicide Prevention Month, and that's when the symposium will happen. There will be presentations, music, audience q and a, and most importantly, all kinds of information on where to get help. There will be plenty of education on suicide, the causes, signs to look for, etc. We'll hand out pamphlets will all kinds of places to go for help.
It feels so good to be able to kick something like this into gear. I'm sure I'm going to learn plenty. I just hope people show up, at this point.
