The first one, but seems that people have forgotten how to have civilized conversations and productive debates. Sadly, it doesn't speak well for the future of our society.
The key is respect for everyone another, not who's out to win a debate. To give your partner a fair chance and really listen to what they're saying, and vice versa without interruption, and if a solution can't be reached, then maybe a compromise between both can make the whole thing a win-win situation where both are satisfied. I think that's the fair way.

@FloorGenAdm Definitely, but it must be learned and practiced to be effective and that is entirely possible. That's the way I communicate and I'm sure there are other couples that deliberately practice this. I don't think many do but I do think there are some that do.
