Will you get into an altercation just to defend the one you love even if they were in the wrong?

Something like this happened to me a few months back. Some dude threatened my friend because he offended his girlfriend. My friend is rather scrawny, so he can't really defend himself. So I told the dude that he should just direct any aggression he has for my friend towards me, because I'm far more capable of handling it.
