Why if the country is Great Britain, and the people are British, do they all seem to speak English?

Great Britain or The United Kingdom is really along the lines of the United States Of America, with the exception that with us Brits, each part is an actual country - England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales...

English is the common language of the unified kingdom.
