Why if the country is Great Britain, and the people are British, do they all seem to speak English?

Because the English tried in the 19th century to discourage use of native accents here in Wales children were punished in schools for speaking in Welsh.

The Welsh language us alive and well in Wales, but ive yet go meet a welsh speaker who doesnt also speak English.
Remember Britain is quite tiny with people crossing borders every day for work, education and leisure. It actuallh only in my lifetime signage in public places is all bilingual...they were mostly just English until quite recently. I still over hear often English visitors moaning at a welsh sign or accusing welsh speakers if being rude for speaking their own tongue in their own country.
