Why if the country is Great Britain, and the people are British, do they all seem to speak English?

@GLITTER Yes, I did geography at school! But why is the British language called English?

@D3cad3nt it’s not, but it’s the generic language of the empire, as it is the generic language of the world, ie it’s used it USA, Australia etc. . But there is also a Welsh, Irish and Scottish language. They’re just not commonly used
