I made my living as a social worker, and always had a little statue of St. Martin on my desk, because he is the patron saint of social workers.
Martin did suffer much abuse from some of the brothers at Holy rosary, because they were mainly of noble birth and considered themselves too good to be associated with Martin.
One incident is especially striking to me. A very prejudiced brother was berating Martin by calling him a "Black Bastard." Prior Loranzana heard the insult and summoned the brother to his office, where he received a good talking-to and made to do penance. That night Martin appeared at the brother's cell door with a basket of fruit.
"What is this for?" asked the brother.
Martin replied, "To thank you for reminding me of what I am. I am obviously black, and yes, I am illegitimate. So thank you for keeping me humble."
The brother felt very ashamed and apologized to Martin for having called him such thoughtless names.
My statue has a little compartment in which I keep a third-class relic of St. Martin.
Thank you for calling awareness to this great and humble saint!
