How to be a good child

For that you'd need to start with good parents.

They'd have to be patient, kind, intelligent enough to know when something's wrong and concerned enough about your welfare to find out how to put it right.

They'd also need to be fair and consistent, honest in their praise taking your age and experience into account. They'd need to be willing to learn whatever it is they think you need to know to ensure that your own opinion about yourself is honest and uncomplicated by peer pressure and other outside influences.

And when you have such parents they need to behave that way consistently for however long it takes for you to feel confident enough in your own abilities to decide it's time for you to fly the nest and build a life of your own.

And when that happens they still need to be consistent. Always being on hand to help out with any unforeseen emergencies that crop up. Always giving you the space you need to learn even more and turn into the you they've been nurturing all along.

And when it's finally time for your parents to pass on, their final duty is to explain to you that it's ok, that just because their bodies are old and tired it doesn't follow that they won't always love you - that their love will always live in your heart and continue to give you the strength and wisdom you'll need to carry on.

Other than that you're best bet is probably to learn how to give yourself all these things. It's not easy but it is possible.
