Extinction Rebellion

What are peoples thoughts on this group and their actions.

I believe their message is the right one just don't think they are gaining much support with their actions. I think the disruption they are causing is gaining more anger towards them that it is gaining support for their worthy cause?

Wasn't sure how this was viewed in general.

Well, let's face it, the softly softly approach has not worked. There is general apathy among the public about what is essentially a climate crisis. And the money makers want to continue to pollute. What do you think we should be doing?

@Egg01 I really don't know. But the government/big corporations these people are trying to make take notice are not being hurt nearly as much as the everyday person. In Cardiff a few months ago nurses and doctors couldn't get to work or at least were delayed. Is this acceptable. I know I'd be livid if my loved ones care was delayed because of a protest. I try to do my bit for the environment, probably nowhere near enough. Big industry won't and in some cases cannot change.

@SW-User Big industry CAN change, it just won't. It's cheaper for them to plunder the earth's resources than to change to using or providing renewable energy. Ultimately the everyday person will suffer, they already are. This is the future of the planet and all life on that we're talking about and while I don't agree with holding up essential medical staff and preventing them from getting to their important jobs I do believe that strong action is needed. To get the message to everyone, to put pressure on the people and organisations who have it within their power to make positive change and save the planet.

@SW-User Climate change needs to be the priority and we need to be if one mind on it.

@Egg01 you are right they can, however, if they took on these extra costs it could me people losing jobs because of higher costs. Maybe they can use cleaner energy but to do so they may have to close a factory or make 500 workers redundant, if you were effected by this directly do you think you'd be happy with your employers. Look I'm playing Devils Advocate here because I believe companies could do a lot more. However, it's not as simple as these big companies just doing it.

Tax loopholes ect need to be looked at and these extra taxes pumped into the environment, however, far more capable and intelligent people than myself struggle to make this work.

@Egg01 it needs to be a very important part of policy I agree there is no quick fix to this and getting there will be a very difficult course.
@Egg01 Great question.

@SW-User There will be no planet for these people to have jobs on. They can get other jobs, I'm not saying that's easy, I've been made redundant myself, more thance once, but given the choice between dying because the planet's fucked and struggling for a while before I find another job, I know which one I'd choose. We need to take this seriously and stop making excuses to divert attention from the most important issue the human race is facing now. It's not going to be easy but we have to get real and tackle this crisis properly and a bit of recycling is not going to cut it. The big polluters must be held to account and made to change. I'm sorry but that is the reality of the situation.

@Egg01 as I'm sure you know it isn't as simple as that. There are people losing homes etc put me in that situation and a choice to save myself/family from immediate issues or do my but for the future I'll look after my family first as I'm sure many would.
Egg01 · 56-60, F
@SW-User Yes I know it's not that simple but if we waste time arguing amongst ourselves we'll lose our planet. That IS simple. What is causing people to lose homes I'm not sure what you mean by that? I know that climate change is and it's taking lives in other countries. I put my family first, like you, but we must also learn to think globally, to take responsibility for our actions, actions that cause other people to suffer. We can't bury our heads in the sand just because it's happening elsewhere. Flooding, for instance, is only going to increase as the temperature rises and because it's happening to other people elsewhere we are in danger of being complacent and missing the signs. We could all make changes in our lifestyles to help and keep the pressure on the corporations. It's a complex subject but some of the solutions are simple and we cannot afford to ignore it. Extinction rebellion is not some campaign to make lives difficult for ordinary folk. It's not an attack on our way of life. It's about making the planet a safer, cleaner place for everyone and we all have to stop bickering, look beyond our own narrow existences and do what we can to facilitate change.
