How do you know/not know if a cut needs stitches without making the trip to the ER?

I caught my leg on a nasty rock when I was surfing today. The cut looks pretty bad, but I can't tell if the cut is deep enough for it to need stitches. I'm kinda hoping not, because I don't want them. 😂

This is why I don’t surf.

But you’d know if you need stitches. But coral has some nasty bacteria so be sure to clean out your wound as best as you can.
