How do you know/not know if a cut needs stitches without making the trip to the ER?

I caught my leg on a nasty rock when I was surfing today. The cut looks pretty bad, but I can't tell if the cut is deep enough for it to need stitches. I'm kinda hoping not, because I don't want them. 😂

Is the wound shallow?
@CountScrofula It's deep enough, but I've never had mi h experience with cuts. I'd probably think a really superficial wound was deep. 😂

@lauriethecolourful If it's more than a quarter-inch deep it probably needs stitches, and if it's jagged you may need them anyways. :\

HEre's a handy list for stitches:

Get stitches if:

The cut is deeper than a quarter of an inch.

The cut was made by a dirty or rusty object and/or there is a risk of infection.

Fat, muscle, bone, or other deep body structures are visible due to the wound.

The cut is over a joint, especially if the edges open when you move the joint or if opening the wound shows muscle, bone, or joint structures.

The injury is deep and on your hand or finger.

You have cosmetic concerns about the wound (i.e. it is on the face or area you don’t want to have a scar).

After 15 minutes of pressure, the cut is still bleeding.
