I suspect it's a cross-pollination of Latin ~ Refrigerator. English ~ Frig and slang.
Refrigerator/Refrigeration is Latin from the old Roman.
First recorded use of the word 'Fridge' is in a novel. Collin Brookes 1935 crime novel 'Frame up'.
Also possible that a company known for making refrigerators (Frigidaire) may have used the term as part of an advertising slogan and may have worked it's way into public consciousness/usage that way.
