I rent out the MIL quarters behind my house. Airbnb isn't for everyone, and you will need to carefully read what the host says in their listing, AND read reviews. Most people who have bad experiences when using an Airbnb haven't taken the time to read the listing; but there are those listings that are not clear or even correct, so read the reviews. Airbnb isn't really a money savings thing - it's a totally different way of traveling. Want a simple room with a really low price? Great, grab a 2 or 3 star hotel room. Want an experience? Try Airbnb.

My cottage is a one bedroom, with full kitchen, living and dining room. It's spotlessly clean, fully furnished, quiet, in a historic neighborhood, and I take great care in providing the guests with everything they need for a night, or several nights stay. It includes a security system, WiFi, cable television with a couple of hundred channels, snacks, and everything one could want... all in the price of a nights stay. What I offer cannot be had in a hotel for less than several hundred a night, and it goes for under a hundred a night which includes all sales taxes and Airbnb fees. Plus you get to stay in a nice, safe neighborhood and I'm here 24/7 while a guest is staying with me, and I can respond immediately to most any reasonable request. Try getting that in a hotel.

@frequentlyme There's a thing with Airbnb where the host and guest often agree to give each other a higher rating because the rating is important to both.

@StevetheSleeve I'm sure that is true, but I doubt it's wide spread. I know I don't do it, and I belong to a large national and international host group wherein we talk about the rating system quite a lot. Not one person has suggested anything of that nature; but still, where there are people involved, there are those who will try to rig the system.
