Am I normal?

My money was stolen by a hospital cleaner on Sunday. The theif was identified by cctv footage. Howeverwhen they went to his house he had done a runner and his family seemed really distraught with the police turning up on their door.

The hospital today reimbursed me my money saying they will recover from his parents. I felt this sharp pang of pain in my heart thinking what the family must be going through because of his wrong doing. Apparently his mum was crying loads.
I've come home with a very heavy heart thinking I shouldn't have taken my money back.

Is this normal. I feel terrible😢

If I was his parent, I would want to sort out the issue out as quickly as possible, ie get you and anybody else their money back. My sadness would be in that my child had carried out this act, lost his job, felt that he couldn't come to me if he was in need, etc. The people involved here are probably the same as me, you get your money back and they feel happier, nothing for you to worry about.

@GeniUs thank you. I didn't file charges as I don't want to hurt his family anymore which means I won't be able to claim from my insurance but I don't need to take that money at the cost of destroying is future as he won't get a job again without police verification

I hope his family can sort him out but you have made a huge contribution to that already by not making the situation any worse for them. This has made me consider what I would have done in that scenario.
