What level of formality do you expect?

A local nonprofit is looking to fight drug and alcohol use and gets together a stakeholder committee to discuss the issue and gets people from all walks of life - students, nonprofit leaders, recovering drug users, etc. How should the student address the other members?

It usually can't hurt to be a little more formal than required.

I'd err on the side of caution and use the last name, giving people the option to say that I could call them by their first name.

Formality creates barriers. This is a case where that's the worst thing to do.
